Jewsbury Named Captain
Recent midfield signing Jack Jewsbury has been named the Timbers captain for the 2011 season, the club announced today.
Jewsbury came to Portland in a March 1st trade from Sporting Kansas City where he spent the past eight seasons. He appeared in 28 or more games in each of the last six seasons for Sporting and is among the club’s all-time leaders in games started, games played, minutes played, and assists.
“Jack is a good leader and an experienced professional with nine years in MLS,” said coach John Spencer in the Timbers official press release. “It was not an easy decision, as we have a lot of good candidates on the team, but Jack stood out and came to the top of the list.”
Jewsbury wore the armband during this past weekend’s Cascadia Summit match against Seattle, and the announcement comes one week ahead of the team’s first regular-season match as an MLS club March 19th in Colorado.
Portland travels to San Jose today for their final pre-season game tomorrow against the Earthquakes.
